Cadillac continued to show its strength in Saturday’s morning, afternoon and night sessions at Daytona International Speedway as IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship teams and drivers completed the second day of the Roar Before the Rolex 24.
Wayne Taylor Racing’s Jordan Taylor set the pace in Session 3 before handing the reins over to Action Express Racing’s Felipe Nasr who topped both Sessions 4 and 5 in the No. 31 Cadillac DPi-V.R.
The fastest lap of the day came in the closing stages of Session 4 when Nasr turned a 1:36.973 that kept him 0.083 seconds quicker than the best Ryan Hunter-Reay could offer in the No. 10 car.
The remaining Cadillacs locked out the rest of the top four on Saturday with the No. 90 Spirit of Daytona and No. 5 Action Express machines third and fourth fastest, respectively.
The only non-DPi car in the top five was the No. 78 Jackie Chan DC Racing ORECA 07 driven by Alex Brundle whose 1:37.238 was the fifth-fastest lap on Saturday.
Ford Dominant in GTLM
Chip Ganassi Racing’s second day at the Roar proved as successful as Cadillac’s with both of its Ford GTs setting the top two times in GT Le Mans.
Sebastien Bourdais’ 1:43.798 in Session 5 kept the No. 66 Ford fastest overall while Ryan Briscoe’s 1:43.980 in Session 4 put the No. 67 second on Saturday’s combined timesheet.
Alessandro Pier Guidi’s best lap from the fourth session put the No. 62 Ferarri 488 GTE third fastest on the day while the two Porsche 911 RSRs of the Porsche GT Team completed the top five.
Porsche Tops GTD
The No. 59 Porsche 911 GT3 R of Manthey Racing driven by Matteo Cairoli set the day’s pace in GT Daytona with a 1:47.125 turned in Session 3.
Mario Farnbacher, second fastest in the No. 93 Acura NSX GT3 fielded by Michael Shank Racing, was 0.3 seconds slower than Cairoli’s time.
Grasser Racing Team’s No. 11 Lamborghini Huracan GT3 turned the third-fastest lap on Saturday at the hands of Mirko Bortolotti while Dominik Baumann made it four manufacturers in the top four in the No. 14 Lexus RC F GT3 of 3GT Racing.
Partick Lindsey put a second Porsche in the top five with a 1:47.537 turned by the No. 73 Park Place Motorsports machine in Session 4.
The WeatherTech Championship will be back in action on Sunday. Session 6, set to run for 45 minutes, will begin at 10:45 a.m. EST. Qualifying for each of the three classes will follow at 11:25 a.m. for GTD, 11:50 a.m. for GTLM and 12:15 p.m. for Prototype. The weekend will wrap up with Session 7 at 2:45 p.m.
