The 35-car entry list for the 2018 Indianapolis 500 has been maintained with confirmation from Dale Coyne Racing that part-time driver Zachary Claman De Melo will occupy the cockpit of the No. 19 Honda at the 102nd running of the famed race.
Claman De Melo, who shares the car with Pietro Fittipaldi, substituted for that driver at the INDYCAR Grand Prix on May 12 after a vicious crash during qualifying for the 6 Hours of Spa-Francorchamps that injured both of Fittipaldi’s legs.
As an Indy 500 rookie, Claman De Melo will participate in the scheduled Rookie Orientation Program on Tuesday, May 15 from 1 to 3 p.m. EDT. Following the completion of testing, the track will be open for three hours for all cars, giving Claman De Melo his first opportunity to run in a full-field Verizon IndyCar Series practice at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
Dedicated practice days will continue through Friday. Claman De Melo will then attempt to qualify his way into the race on Saturday, May 19. The final starting grid will be set the following day. The race itself will go green on Sunday, May 27 at 12:21 p.m. with live coverage on ABC.
