Braun Sweeps Friday Practice at CTMP

Colin Braun topped his second consecutive IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship practice session Friday at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, turning the fastest lap of the day in his No. 54 CORE autosport ORECA 07.

Continuing his streak of success dating back to his pole position and runner-up finish at Watkins Glen International, Braun’s 1:06.902 surpassed his chart-topping Practice 1 time by 0.253 seconds.

While quick, Braun’s speedy lap was only 0.037 seconds faster than Dane Cameron’s best effort in his No. 6 Team Penske Acura ARX-05. Cameron bested Braun’s time in two of the 2.459-mile track’s three sectors, contributing to his 1:06.939 — the second of only two laps under the 67-second mark.

Despite having a significant off at Turn 5 that brought out a red flag and necessitated the recovery of the No. 7 Acura by a flatbed truck, Helio Castroneves put a second Penske car in the top three with a 1:07.881.

At more than one second behind Braun’s blistering pace, Harry Tincknell’s No. 55 Mazda RT24-P was fourth fastest while the No. 22 Nissan Onroak DPi of Ryan Dalziel was fifth quick.

Behind sixth-fastest Felipe Nasr in the No. 31 Action Express Cadillac DPi-V.R — the quickest representative of the American brand — Robert Alon’s No. 85 JDC-Miller Motorsports ORECA 07 was the second-fastest LMP2 car, ranked seventh with a lap time of 1:08.299.

Jordan Taylor, Christian Fittipaldi, Olvier Jarvis, Stephen Simpson and Gustavo Yacaman completed the 12-car class, down one car following the retirement of Performance Tech Motorsports’ ORECA 07 after a crash in Practice 1.

Porsche Remains Strong in GTLM

Like Prototype, GT Le Mans saw the same team on top of the running order for the second consecutive session.

Nick Tandy placed his No. 911 Porsche 911 RSR atop the Practice 2 timesheet with a 1:14.357, 0.181 seconds quicker than Earl Bamber’s Practice 1 performance that put the sister No. 911 car at the top of that session.

The pair of Corvette C7.Rs moved up one position over their Practice 1 effort with the Antonio Garcia four-tenths of a second shy of Tandy’s time to place second fastest. Teammate Tommy Milner was less than a tenth of a second slower than Garcia to complete the top three.

Laurens Vanthoor’s No. 912 Porsche was 0.6 seconds behind Tandy to end the session in fourth while Dirk Mueller, Richard Westbrook, John Edwards and Connor De Phillippi were all more than a second shy of best in class and were fifth through eighth, respectively.

Acura Edges Lexus for GTD Fast Lap

Alvaro Parente ensured that his No. 86 Meyer Shank Racing Acura NSX GT3 ended the hourlong Practice 2 ahead of the rest of the 11-car GT Daytona class. Katherine Legge, Parente’s co-driver, sits just one point behind championship leaders Bryan Sellers and Madison Snow.

Parente’s 1:16.574 was 0.095 seconds quicker than Kyle Marcelli’s best effort in his No. 14 Lexus RC F GT3, relegating the 3GT Racing car to second on the timesheet.

Wolf Henzler, behind the wheel of the returning No. 16 Wright Motorsports Porsche 911 GT3 R, was third fastest and just 0.005 seconds slower than Marcelli.

Championship leader Sellers of Paul Miller Racing and Mangus Racing’s Andy Lally completed the top five in Lamborghini and Audi machinery, respectively, ahead of Jeroen Bleekemolen, Jeff Segal, Jack Hawksworth and Lawson Aschenbach.

Defending GTD champion Christina Nielsen brought up the rear of the class with her best lap 1.175 seconds slower than Parente’s.

The series will be back on track Saturday for 60 minutes of practice beginning at 8:30 a.m. EDT ahead of qualifying for all three classes starting with GTD at 12:10 p.m.
