An LMP2 car trumped the speed of the fastest DPi cars for the third Prototype race in a row as Robert Alon put one of JDC-Miller Motorsports’ ORECA 07s atop the qualifying results at Road America.
After starting second at the previous race at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, co-drivers Robert Alon and Simon Trummer will move up one position in Elkhart Lake thanks to Alon’s 1:51.933 — the only qualifying lap to dip under 1:52.
While the team has one win to their name in 2018, the qualifying effort by Alon in the No. 85 ORECA earned the JDC-Miller team its first Prototype pole. Subsequently, it’s the first pole for Alon in the premier class, adding to the four he claimed in the Prototype Challenge class.
Ricky Taylor qualified the No. 7 Acura ARX-05 and came closest to challenging Alon but the Team Penske driver’s fastest lap was still two-tenths of a second off the pole pace, relegating the car and driver to a start from the outside of the front row.
Colin Braun, who entered the Road America weekend having won two consecutive poles at Watkins Glen International and CTMP, was exactly 0.2 seconds slower than Taylor, earning he and co-driver Jonathan Bennett a start from the inside of Row 2 in their CORE autosport ORECA.
Renger van der Zande delivered the fastest qualifying lap for a Cadillac DPi-V.R, placing fourth in the order ahead of Juan Pablo Montoya in the second Acura. After starring in Practice 1, Oliver Jarvis could do no better than sixth in his No. 77 Mazda RT24-P with a lap 0.9 seconds shy of Alon’s pole-winning time.
Joao Barbosa, Harry Tincknell, Eric Curran and Misha Goikhberg completed the top 10 ahead of Gustavo Yacaman who was 11th fastest.
Both Tequila Patron ESM cars brought up the rear of the 13-car class with Scott Sharp lapping 1.7 seconds off Alon’s pace and Johannes van Overbeek a further half second behind.
The prototypes will join both GT classes for a brief 20-minute warmup Sunday at 8:30 a.m. CDT while the race itself will go green at 1:35 p.m. with live flag-to-flag coverage on FS1.
